Recent Grads: Land the Job.

February 15, 2013

You’ve just graduated from college. You are fresh faced and ready to take on the big wide world of adulthood. You, and the rest of your fellow graduates, are all running to job boards, searching for their big break. How are you supposed to stand out from the rest? Here are some tips to help you land that first job.

1. Experience – You have some!
You haven’t left college empty handed, despite what some employers may think. No matter your job experience, you’ve learned some important skills along the way. While you may not have direct experience in an industry, you do have transferable skills such as leadership or problem solving that are important. Find these key words in the job description and give examples of how you have used those skills.

2. Strategic Resume – Be Interesting.
Employers get resumes everyday and often times, don’t even read them. It’s important to make sure yours stands out from the rest. We aren’t talking about using pink, scented paper, but about the content. When describing your experience, use action words and show how organizing your sorority’s mixer can apply to the job you are applying for. You are the only who has experienced what you have experienced, so show it! Tip: Try to keep it to one page; employers don’t want to hear what you did in middle school or even high school.

3. Have Goals, but Be Flexible – You still need a job.
Most college grads have big dreams when they walk off that stage. They want their dream job and often times fall into the trap of only applying for jobs they think will directly translate to that dream. It’s important to keep an open mind when looking for your first job, because it’s just that – your first job. It doesn’t have to be perfect and you’ll still gain valuable experience that future employers will appreciate. You don’t have to give up on your goals, but be open to branching out.

The most important part with anyone at any age applying for jobs is to stand out and show potential employers why you are different from the rest.
